We don't know how much the Tab 8.9 will cost, but we know that it will be coming to shops in May. One small note: we tested a pre-production model that's slightly different to what will hit the shops.
The Tab 8.9 runs Google's Android operating system, but it's not the smart-phone version that we saw on the original Tab. Instead, it will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which Google says is better suited to a tablet's big screen.
It's early days for Honeycomb, but we've seen the new OS in action and it's got us as giddy as newborn colts. If you've used Android on a phone, you'll already be familiar with its massive buffet of features, from Google Maps to the Android Market, which is full of apps and games.
Honeycomb also adds a whole new user interface to take advantage of the screen space available on a tablet. 3D effects make it fun to whip between home screens, while new APIs allow bigger widgets with more graphical effects. A good example is the Google Editions ebook reader widget, which shows a stack of covers that you can flick through with your finger, so you can pick a book before you open the full app.
Honeycomb also moves the Android buttons -- home, back, search and menu -- onto the screen, so they move when you switch between portrait and landscape view. The buttons are kept to the lower-left-hand side of the display at all times, so you'll know where to find them no matter how you're holding the Tab.
Another honey-sweet feature should be the addition of tabs to the Android Web browser. Opening multiple windows in tabs is an option in most desktop browsers, but there's not really enough room for this on a phone's screen. Along with support for Flash, the presence of tabs should make Web browsing on the Tab 8.9 even more enjoyable.
